How To Perform a Free Search for Johnson County Marriage Records

Individuals interested in Johnson County marital records can conveniently run free searches online using the District Court Documents Search system.1 This public records search tool is good for any kind of search that involves documents and events that are recorded by the courts but is particularly accessible for marriage records.

Right on the front page, users can select “Marriage License” and run a search using one of the names of the couple. Then, users must click on the exact search option (when they’re absolutely sure they have the correct information) or the partial name search, which will lead to more results.

The results appear as a list of cases, and users must click on the one they want to know more about. Doing that leads to the page that contains details about the event that’s being searched. Citizens can expect to find information such as the date when the couple applied for the license, the numbers of the license, when the ceremony took place, the full name of the spouses and their places of birth, among other things.

This system won’t help anyone obtain official marriage certificates (which will be addressed further in this article) but is very helpful in uncovering information about people in the community or starting genealogical research.

In Kansas, certified copies of marital records are provided by the Vital Records Office.3 How to work with them will be described below. However, since the Johnson County District Court is responsible for keeping those records, their Clerk’s Office can be helpful when information or non-certified copies are needed.

This is how interested individuals can contact the Johnson County Clerk’s Office when they need support:

Historical or genealogical searches often need more resources than the ones offered by the local Clerk’s Office. There are tools available for those searches through other agencies, which will be discussed below.

How Do I View Historical or Archived Marriage Records in Johnson County Kansas?

The Johnson County Archives & Records Management helps citizens find and obtain copies of marriage records between 1858 and 1969.4 It’s possible to request copies of records in their collections by phone, email, or in person.

Users should contact them with as much information as possible about the Johnson County marital records they wish to know more about. This department won’t provide certified copies and each simple copy they make costs $0.25 per page. Considering they make copies of original, ancient documents (digitized, microfilmed, or kept on paper), they don’t guarantee the quality of the image that will be produced.

If little is known about the event being searched and time from the staff is necessary to look for documents, they may charge a fee. The first 30 minutes are free, and after that, citizens may have to pay $25 per hour for their work in increments of 30 minutes. It’s mandatory to schedule an appointment by phone when someone wishes to be seen in person.

How Do I Access All Kansas Marriage Records?

When a nuptial happens in a different area of Kansas, searching exclusively for Johnson County marital records will not lead to any results. Likewise, when a certified copy of a marriage certificate is needed, working with the local resources may also lead nowhere.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment, through the Vital Records Office, provides certified copies of marriage records connected to weddings throughout the state, starting in 1913.8 Information about marriages that happened before 1913 must be searched at the Kansas Historical Society (as mentioned before).

Marriage certificates can be ordered in person, by phone, by mail, through the state’s app, or online. Individuals placing requests must always present a valid ID. Certificates cost $20, and in some cases, there are extra fees, such as expedited or handling fees.

When those placing a request aren’t part of the couple, they must be somehow connected to them and show proof of that connection (be a family member, an attorney, etc.). Everyone must complete an application for a certified copy of a marriage certificate to expedite the process of locating the records.9 This is the contact information for the Vital Records Office:

To place an order using the state’s app, users can search for the term IKAN at their app store and download it. They should select the option Ikan – State of Kansas and, after the download, follow the instructions to order the certificates they need.

Online orders are handled with the help of VitalChek. Of all of those options, users must remember that this is a third-party provider that may charge extra fees and need more information before delivering the requested records.
